Viktor Frankl survived the brutal reality of concentration camps during the Holocaust, losing almost all of his family, including his parents, brother, and wife. Despite being stripped of everything and living under the constant threat of death, he realized that one essential freedom remained—the freedom to choose how we respond to any situation. As Frankl put it, when we can't change our external reality, we are challenged to change ourselves.
Frankl’s reflections and responses in the face of suffering, which he shared in 'Man's Search for Meaning', laid the foundation for his work as a psychotherapist. He helped countless people find healing and purpose after trauma. His experience highlights that trauma, and he took his trauma and 'chose' to make it count for something.
